As writers, we all have times when the writing is going really well and it’s easy to stay motivated to continue writing.

But we also have times when things get in the way of our writing, and we don’t write for awhile.

When we do have time to write again, we find it difficult to get started and back on track with our work.

how to start writing again

If you’ve gotten offtrack and are finding it nearly impossible to start writing again, try these tips.

1. Pick something easy and fun to write at first.

Instead of diving back into your novel or other work-in-progess, start with something that will just be fun to write.

For example, choose one of our weekly writing prompts and see where it takes you.

Don’t worry about how good the writing is, just write and have fun.

2. Plan to work in small chunks.

By this I mean, plan to work in small chunks of time and on small chunks of any project.

Even when we’re feeling great about our work a writing project can still be a bit overwhelming, so don’t expect too much of yourself too soon after a long break from writing.

Ease back into your work-in-progress and celebrate any small accomplishment you experience.

For example, if all you manage to do is fill in one section of your novel’s outline today, celebrate that.

You don’t need to write the scene yet.

Just the fact that you know what you plan to write for this scene is enough right now.

3. Journal about Your Current Project and/or Your Feelings about It.

Sometimes, just getting our feelings out and on paper (or computer file) can help us see what is keeping us from moving forward.

I use my Success Journal for this, but any type of journal or just blank paper will do.
