The Journal Writer’s Companion – A Review from Suzanne Lieurance

Every writer doesn’t journal, but I think every writer should.

There are just so many benefits to a regular journaling practice.

And you’ll learn all about them in this new book from journaling expert, Alyss Thomas.

In The Journal Writer’s Companion, Thomas starts out by explaining what journaling can do for you.

Then, she shows you how to get started.

Next, she covers different types of journaling and even the history and philosophy of journaling, then she goes into the benefits of journaling in greater detail.

The book includes many different types of journaling prompts, so you won’t need to sit around and wonder what you journal about if you have this book.

You can start journaling immediately—and with purpose.

The final section of the book includes some tips for troubleshooting (if you have trouble continuing your journaling practice).

What I Particularly Like about This Book

1. The writing prompts

All kinds of different prompts are scattered throughout the book.

2. The explanations of different types of journals

These explanations will help you understand what type of journaling you should do depending on your purpose for journaling.

3. The explanations of the many purposes of journaling

I’d never even thought of some of these before, but now I definitely want to add different types of journals and different journaling techniques to my journaling practice.

I’m sure you will, too.

4. The physical book itself

It’s a sturdy hardback with heavy paper and opens flat (unlike many books that don’t stay open when you put them on your desk or table).

I also just like the smooth feel of the book.

I like writing in books that are really helpful like this one, and the book includes lined space for notes, and it has an attached ribbon bookmark.

5. Easy to read and follow

Many points are bulleted for easy reading, and many key points are quoted on separate pages with a photo – so, overall, the book is “user friendly” (and I say “user” friendly instead of “reader” friendly because you’ll use the book, not simply read it).

Whether you’ve been journaling all your life, or you’re just thinking about starting a regular journaling practice, you’ll want to get this journaling companion and keep it handy because your reasons for journaling and the types of journaling you’ll do will probably change a lot over time.

Plus, this guide will have you journaling in ways you’ve probably never considered before, especially if you’re a writer who writes novels or other works of fiction.

I think it’s an excellent investment for any writer’s resource library or for anyone who is just thinking about journaling or even just thinking about becoming a writer.
