mother's day creative writing prompts

I hope you can spend time with your mother today, and with your children, if you’re also a mother.

But later today, try one of following prompts and start writing a new short story or even a novel, based on mothers.

Ready?

mother's day creative writing prompts

Here are this week’s prompts:

1. Anna always felt a knot in her stomach on Mother’s Day.

2. A new baby…a new life…a new beginning.

3. Years ago, when Jared was born, Mardi vowed to be the best mother EVER! But now…

4. Patricia hadn’t heard from her son in years.

But it was Mother’s Day again, and when the phone rang, she felt her heart race.

Could it be Michael calling?

5. Jenny planned a lovely picnic at the beach for her mother to celebrate Mother’s Day because the beach was her mother’s favorite place.

But would she show up for the picnic…after all these years?

6. Brian stared ahead at the wall in front of him when his mother’s attorney read the will.

Just like Mother, thought Brian, to leave me nothing but her stupid cat.

7. Cassidy wanted to make sure her mother’s “golden years” were truly golden.

But she hadn’t expected this.

8. Natalie looked up at the woman behind the desk.

“Would you like to meet your mother?” the woman asked.

9. Sally had always been an excellent godmother to Hayley.

She never missed the girl’s birthday, and she showed up at all of Hayley’s school events.

But with the sudden, tragic death of Hayley’s parents, Sally wondered what kind of mother she would now be to a 12-year-old girl.

10. The emergency room was cold and noisy.

The young doctor smiled at Sylvia and said, “You’re pregnant, Mrs. Harrington.

Sylvia Harrington said nothing.

“Mrs. Harrington, are you all right?” asked the doctor.
