Narrow your focus

Summer is the perfect time to narrow your focus if you’ve been having a tough time reaching your writing and/or career goals.

If you narrow your focus for a while, you’re more likely to create some momentum that can help move you along to one of your goals.

To do that, go back to your three major writing/career goals for the year (You did take the time to develop no more than three major goals earlier this year, didn’t you?).

Pick just ONE of those goals to focus on over the summer.

For example, if one of your major goals is to become a published novelist by the end of the year, then focus on ONLY that part of your writing career for the next few months.

If you do, you’ll probably be amazed at the progress you’ll make.

If, on the other hand, one of your major goals is to start earning publication credits (and income) from magazines, then focus ONLY on that goal for the entire summer.

Make a point to get at least one query out to a magazine market every single week.

Better yet, get a couple of queries submitted each week.

Did you list affiliate marketing as one of your three major goals for the year?

Then be sure you’re doing everything it takes to earn income this way.

Write articles to drive traffic to the sites where you’re offering affiliate products.

Create an opt-in page so you can get more people on your mailing list since you’ll need a responsive list if you hope to make many affiliate sales.

There are dozens of things any writer can do each day.

The most successful writers tend to focus on just one thing at a time until they create some momentum.

Try it!

P.S. If writing a novel is your number one goal, I can help you get started right now.

I’ll work with you one-on-one every week for 16 weeks to plan, write, and revise your novel and produce a manuscript that’s ready to submit to an agent, a traditional publisher, or to self-publish.

By the end of these four months, you’ll also know the steps needed to write a novel from start to finish, so you can write your next novel – and the next and the next – on your own or with minimal coaching!

  1. Suzanne,
Thanks for the suggestion. Starting next month, I’m going to concentrate on magazines. I hope that way this summer I will get more accomplished. Working toward the one goal will help me reach my goal.
