Our August Writing Challenge: Bold Creative Expansion

by Suzanne Lieurance

Each month we feature a writing challenge that is the theme for the entire month — and all our content is based on that theme.

Each monthly theme builds on the previous one, so be sure to look back at each theme for this year, no matter when you are reading this. You can start manifesting your writing life based on these themes at any time.

Here are the themes for the year, so far:

January 2026 Challenge/Theme Live as Your Future-Writer-Self
February 2026 Challenge/ThemeStrengthen Your Writer Identity
March 2026 Challenge/Theme Become a Writer Who Finishes
April 2026 Challenge/ThemeDevotion to the Work
May 2026 Challenge/ThemeBuild Your Creative Capacity
June 2026 Challenge/Theme Visibility as a Writer
July 2026 Challenge/Theme – Writing in Flow

Last month, our challenge was Writing in Flow: Create from Rhythm Instead of Pressure. We focused on building consistent writing habits, reducing resistance, and creating the conditions that allow creativity to flourish. If you missed it, I encourage you to read Our July Writing Challenge: Writing in Flow before diving into this month’s challenge. The two themes build naturally on one another.

Writing in flow helps you write consistently.

This month, we’re going to look at what you’re writing toward.

Our theme for August is Bold Creative Expansion.

Because here’s something I’ve noticed after working with writers for more than twenty-five years.

Very few writers dream too big.

Far more dream too small.

Not because they lack imagination. Not because they lack talent. But because somewhere along the way, they quietly lowered their expectations to something that felt safer.

Maybe they decided they weren’t experienced enough to write the novel they really wanted to write.

Maybe they convinced themselves they should settle for writing short pieces instead of the book they’ve been thinking about for years.

Maybe they stopped submitting their work after a few rejections and quietly accepted that publishing probably wasn’t going to happen.

Over time, those small decisions create an invisible ceiling.

You stop asking yourself what you really want and start asking yourself what’s realistic.

That’s what this month’s challenge is all about.

What Is Bold Creative Expansion?

Bold creative expansion isn’t about becoming louder, busier, or more productive.

It isn’t about publishing more books or spending more hours at your desk.

It’s about giving yourself permission to think bigger than you’ve been allowing yourself to think.

It’s about writing the book that excites you instead of the one that feels safe.

It’s about submitting your work even when you’re not completely confident.

It’s about allowing yourself to imagine the writing life you truly want instead of the one you’ve decided is “good enough.”

Most of all, it’s about recognizing where fear has quietly become the decision-maker in your writing life.

Why This Matters

One of the biggest mistakes writers make is believing they have to feel completely ready before taking the next big step.

In reality, confidence usually comes after action—not before it.

You don’t become the writer who can write a bigger book and then begin.

You become that writer by writing the bigger book.

That’s why finishing matters so much.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read How to Be a Writer Who Finishes, one of our pillar resources here at Write by the Sea. Every finished project teaches you something that no amount of planning ever can. Each one expands your confidence and prepares you for the next challenge.

What We’ll Be Exploring This Month

Throughout August, we’ll be looking at questions like:

  • How do you recognize where you’ve been playing small?
  • What would your writing life look like if you stopped limiting yourself?
  • How do you commit to a bigger vision without becoming overwhelmed?
  • How do you grow into the writer your biggest project requires?

Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we’ll explore another aspect of bold creative expansion with practical ideas you can apply immediately to your own writing life.

Our Morning Nudges this month will also support the challenge with simple daily reminders designed to keep your thinking focused on growth instead of limitation.

Remember What You Learned in July

One reason I wanted to spend July talking about flow is because expansion is much easier when you’re already writing consistently.

Flow removes resistance.

Expansion gives that writing a bigger purpose.

If you’ve developed a regular writing rhythm over the past month, you’re in the perfect position to ask a new question:

Am I writing at the size of my real ambition?

If the answer is yes, wonderful.

If the answer is no, August is your opportunity to change that.

Your August Challenge

This week, take a few minutes to think about the writing project you’ve been quietly making smaller.

Then write a description of the project exactly as you’d love it to be.

Don’t edit it.

Don’t explain why it probably won’t happen.

Don’t tell yourself you’re not ready.

Simply describe the project you genuinely want to create.

Once you’ve done that, ask yourself one simple question: What’s one action I can take this week that moves me toward that bigger vision?

That’s all.

You don’t have to finish the journey today.

You simply have to stop walking away from it.

I hope you’ll join me throughout August as we challenge ourselves to think bigger, write bolder, and stop settling for smaller dreams than we’re truly capable of achieving. Because sometimes the biggest breakthrough in your writing life doesn’t begin with a new technique.

It begins with giving yourself permission to dream at your full size.
