Our July Writing Challenge is about freedom.

We all value freedom.

But the concept of freedom is a bit different for everyone.

This month’s challenge is to write a short story about a character whose personal freedom is being threatened in some way.

That’s the broad story problem, but just HOW is this character’s freedom threatened?

And what does this character attempt to do to save his freedom and what are the problems he faces along the way?

Gun control, reproductive rights, and war in the Ukraine are all in the news right now.

You might decide to create a fictional character whose life is personally affected by one or more of these issues/events.

Or, maybe the Covid-19 pandemic might serve as the backdrop for your story.

Remember, for a good story you will need to have:

1. A main character with a problem to solve.

2. Complications as he tries to solve this problem (this is the rising action).

3. A climactic event (the most exciting part of the story that changes everything in some way).

4. A satisfying ending—where the main character either solves or resolves his big problem.

5. An interesting setting, rich, sensory details, dialogue that moves the story forward, plenty of action, and well-developed characters.

Use this list to come up with a broad outline for your story, then start writing.

Try it!
