New Writing Prompts for the Week

Here are 7 fresh creative writing prompts for the week.

Each one offers a unique setup designed to stir the imagination and get words flowing.

Use one prompt each day this week, or combine several prompts to make one interesting and, perhaps, unuusal story.

Monday’s Prompt – The Mailbox in the Lake

A rusted mailbox appears overnight at the edge of a lake—half-submerged and sealed tight.

When your character opens it, what’s inside has no business being dry… or real.

Tuesday’s Prompt – Yesterday’s Shoes

Your character wakes up wearing a pair of worn shoes they’ve never seen before.

No matter how many times they take them off, the shoes keep reappearing.

They belong to someone who needs help.

Wednesday’s Prompt – The Map with No Roads

A folded map shows up in your character’s backpack—no roads, no towns, just a set of shifting symbols.

When they follow it, the world starts changing around them.

Thursday’s Prompt – The Blink

Your character blinks—and the world skips forward five minutes.

Everyone else acts like nothing happened.

But the skipped minutes start adding up.

What’s slipping through the cracks?

Friday’s Prompt – The Wishing Fountain Reversed

At the center of a quiet plaza sits a fountain that doesn’t grant wishes—it collects them.

When your character drops in a coin, they lose something they never meant to give away.

Saturday’s Prompt – The Person Who Didn’t Exist Yesterday

A friendly stranger chats with your character at a café.

Later, your character realizes that no records of this person exist—no ID, no social media, no memory in anyone else’s mind.

Sunday’s Prompt – The Hill That Wasn’t There

A new hill appears just beyond the edge of town.

Your character hikes to the top and finds something waiting that feels both ancient and familiar.
