The following is an excerpt from The Children’s Writer’s Guide 2.

Writing a synopsis of your story isn’t a bad idea, since this will invariably tell you whether or not your book is any good.

For your website, Amazon profile description, or back cover description, you’ll need to compose a compelling marketing piece about the story in the form of a short paragraph, at the most maybe 200 words or so.

Sometimes publishers even want a two-page synopsis of the story to assist the artist in creating an appropriate, eye-catching book cover.

Creating a synopsis can be a worthwhile exercise, especially if you do this when you’re writing the story or at least in the closing stages of the project, when it’s still all very fresh in your mind.

Sometimes you’ll already have all this in your head if you decide to create a detailed outline of the novel outline before you start writing.

However, an outline developed at the outset will help you to explain the story to someone else once it’s completed, perhaps even persuade a publisher to notice you and give you a contract.
