When you’re writing, you want to be as clear to the reader as possible.

Also, if you’re writing dialogue, you want to write words that ring true for your characters.

Most of the time, this means cutting pretentious words from your work.

  1. Words go in fads too. “Curate” is one that has been over-used lately, and also comes across as pretentious (see above).
