Wow! I can’t believe how much craziness is going on in the world today.

A few months ago, I never would have imagined this, but lately, my husband has become our “toilet paper scout.”

toilet paper shortage

Every day for the past few days, I’ve sent him out into the world to see if any of our local stores has toilet paper yet.

On Sunday there was no toilet paper to be found in our entire town, but he managed to snap up a box of Kleenex and a package of dinner napkins at Aldi’s.

Yesterday, was a complete wash as far as paper products go, so this morning I sent him out early (during the “shopping for seniors only” time) to our Publix grocery store.

A little later he came back home victorious.

Not only had he snagged a package of toilet paper, but he got a 4-roll pack of paper towels, too.

We were dancing around so much, you would have thought we just won the lottery!

Now, you may wonder why in the world I’m telling you this in a post at writebythesea, a site which is supposed to be all about writing tips and resources.

But that is precisely WHY I’m relating all this in today’s post.

More than ever, the world right now is a gold mine for creative writers.

No doubt I’ll turn today’s victory into an essay or even a short story at some point.

But I’m also watching the news for other ideas.

Like, when I heard that people were buying out all the guns at gun shops, and now the gun shops are being forced to close, a story title immediately came to mind—The Great Toilet Paper War of 2020.

I envisioned all these people buying guns, not to protect their families, but to force those hoarders to give up their toilet paper stashes.

Now that could be a fun story to write.

So, how are you using today’s headlines, and even the strange things going on in your own life today, as ideas for stories, essays, and even blog posts?

Don’t let these golden opportunities pass you by.

Think of at least one crazy thing you can use as the basis for an essay, short story, or a blog post today.

Try it!
